The unit blocks
Labrador has a lot of two and three storey walk-up blocks built from the 1960s to the 1980s. They are practical, well-located buildings, but the electrical systems are often original or close to it. Common issues we find:
- Unit switchboards with rewireable fuses and no safety switch
- Main meter panels with deteriorated wiring and cramped layouts
- Common area lighting on old fluorescent fittings and timers
- Laundry and carport circuits extended over the years without upgrades

Older houses
Labrador’s detached homes are mostly established lowsets, with a scattering of older timber houses. Many are rentals or owned by people who have lived in them for a long time. The electrical work here is practical: replacing old boards, adding safety switches, sorting out power points that have stopped working and upgrading lighting.
Smoke alarms before 2027
From 1 January 2027, every Queensland home needs photoelectric smoke alarms complying with AS 3786-2014, interconnected, in every bedroom, in hallways connecting bedrooms and on every storey. They must be hardwired or powered by a 10-year non-removable lithium battery. Homes that are sold or leased already have to meet this. Living on the Broadwater
The Broadwater is calmer than the surf beaches, but it still brings salt air and humidity to the foreshore streets. Balcony fittings, outdoor lights and air conditioning isolators on the waterfront buildings wear out faster than inland. When replacing them we choose fittings suited to the conditions, and we check that outdoor circuits are properly protected.
Retirement living and older residents
Labrador is popular with retirees, and we are mindful of that on site. We explain what we are doing, keep walkways clear, and make sure lighting is left bright and easy to use. Simple changes like better hallway and outdoor lighting, extra power points at bench height, or a hardwired smoke alarm system can make a home easier and safer to live in.
Local shops and small businesses
Labrador’s shopping strips and small commercial buildings need the usual run of maintenance, lighting, test and tag and fault calls. We work around trading hours and keep disruption to a minimum.
