Project homes reaching middle age
Most houses in Upper Coomera were built by volume builders between the late 1990s and 2010s. They were wired to the standard of the day, which was sound, but often with a basic switchboard, a limited number of power points and whatever downlights were cheapest at the time.
Twenty years on, families have added air conditioning, a second fridge, a pool, a home office and maybe solar. The board is full, some halogen or early LED downlights have failed, and the kitchen never has enough power points. These are the jobs that fill most of our days here.
Five upgrades that make the most difference
- A modern switchboard with room to grow and RCBO protection on every circuit. See switchboard upgrades.
- Proper circuits for air conditioning, sized correctly and not piggybacked onto power circuits.
- Extra power points where you actually use them: benchtops, bedsides and the study.
- Quality LED downlights replacing failed or flickering fittings. Our LED downlight guide helps with choices.
- Interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms to meet Queensland’s 2027 requirements.
Solar, batteries and EVs
Upper Coomera’s large, sunny roofs make it a natural fit for solar, and many homes already have it. The next step for many families is a battery or an electric car, and both put more demand on the switchboard. We assess the board, make space for the new equipment and install EV chargers on dedicated circuits. For inverter connections, work must meet AS/NZS 4777 and network requirements, and we coordinate with your solar installer on the electrical side.
Rental properties
The suburb has a big share of investment properties. Landlords and property managers need electrical safety, working smoke alarms and prompt repairs. We work with agents to access tenanted homes, report clearly and complete jobs in one visit where we can. See our rental property electrical page.
The rural edge
On the western side, blocks get bigger and the landscape turns semi-rural. Homes on acreage often have long cable runs to sheds, pumps and gates, detached garages and separate outbuildings. Undersized cable over long distances causes voltage drop and nuisance faults, and older underground runs can be damaged by digging or roots. We size cable for the distance and load and can trace and repair faults on long runs.
Hills and storms
Upper Coomera’s ridgelines catch the full force of summer storms. Lightning and power surges can damage appliances, solar inverters and electronics. A surge protection device at the switchboard is an inexpensive way to reduce that risk, and we can fit one during other work. It will not stop a direct strike, but it helps protect sensitive electronics from the more common surges on the network.
