Three kinds of Pottsville job
Most of the work we do in Pottsville falls into one of three groups. Each needs a slightly different approach, and it helps to know which one you’re in before we quote. A near-new home on a small block, a 1970s brick house near the creek and a ten-acre property off a gravel road can all ask for “a few extra power points”, but the work behind that request is very different.
1. Newer estate homes
A lot of Pottsville homes are less than twenty years old. The wiring is modern, but builders often supplied the minimum: a few downlights per room, not quite enough power points, and a switchboard with little room to spare. Owners usually call us once they’ve lived in the home for a while and know what’s missing.
Common requests include:
- Extra power points, including USB outlets in kitchens and bedrooms
- Ceiling fans in bedrooms and on the patio
- Garage circuits for a freezer, workshop or EV charger
- Switchboard changes to fit solar or a battery
- Outdoor lighting and sensor lights around the yard
2. The original village
Closer to the creek and the beach, older homes tell a different story. Some are fibro or weatherboard cottages from the village’s early days, others are brick homes from the 1970s and 80s. Here we tend to find tired switchboards, missing safety switches, and wiring that has been added to over decades.
Before any renovation we recommend a proper inspection. It’s much cheaper to fix wiring while the walls are open than to come back afterwards.
3. Acreage and rural properties to the west
West of the village, the country opens up towards Mooball and Burringbar. Rural and semi-rural blocks bring bigger distances and different equipment:
- Underground supply to sheds, studios and second dwellings
- Pumps for water tanks, dams and irrigation
- Three-phase or larger single-phase supply for workshops
- Lighting for gates, yards and long driveways
Long cable runs have to be sized so that voltage drop doesn’t starve a pump or motor at the far end. We calculate this properly under AS/NZS 3008 and plan trench routes with you before digging.
Smoke alarms and young families
With so many families in Pottsville, smoke alarms are a common topic. NSW rules differ from Queensland’s, with a minimum of at least one working alarm on each level. That minimum is a starting point. For homes with children’s bedrooms at the far end of a hallway, interconnected photoelectric alarms mean everyone hears the alarm at once. We can install them hardwired or with long-life batteries.
