Acreage in Ormeau Hills
Ormeau Hills and the surrounding rural-residential areas are home to larger blocks with big sheds, workshops, animals and outbuildings. The electrical challenges on acreage are different from suburban lots.
Long runs and voltage drop
Sheds, pumps, gates and second dwellings are often a long way from the main switchboard. A cable that is fine over ten metres may be undersized over a hundred, leading to voltage drop, motors struggling to start and nuisance tripping. We size cabling to AS/NZS 3008 for the length and load and, where it makes sense, install a sub-board in the shed.
Underground cabling
Underground runs on acreage are easily damaged by fencing, excavation and tree roots. We locate and repair faults on existing runs and install new cabling in conduit at the correct depth, with marker tape above.
Private poles and overhead lines
Some rural properties have overhead lines on private poles between the property boundary and the house or shed. These are generally the property owner’s responsibility to maintain. If a pole is leaning, rotting or has trees growing into the lines, have it inspected. Our electrical safety inspections cover this.
Sheds and workshops
A big shed is one of the reasons people buy in Ormeau. Proper shed power usually means a sub-board, plenty of outlets, LED lighting, and sometimes three-phase or dedicated circuits for welders and compressors. We plan it around how you will actually use the space.
It pays to think ahead. If you might add a hoist, a bigger compressor or a car charger in the shed later, running a larger cable now saves digging the trench a second time. We talk through likely future loads before sizing anything.
Family estates and new developments
Closer to the Pacific Motorway and the station, Ormeau is typical of a growing family suburb. Established estates from the 1990s and 2000s need the usual upgrades: switchboard upgrades, air conditioning circuits, LED lighting and extra power. Newer homes need the add-ons builders leave out, like fans, data and EV chargers.
Close to Yatala and Stapylton
Many Ormeau residents work in the industrial areas just north, and many local businesses operate out of them. Storms and bushland
Ormeau’s hills and bushland edges get their share of severe summer storms. Falling branches damage overhead service lines, and lightning surges damage appliances and pumps.
